The Farm Comes to Crystal City for Third Year

Sign-Up Now for Your Share of Fruits & Vegetables

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Out with the cold and in with the fruits and vegetables! For the third year, the Crystal City BID is happy to announce the launch of the 2010 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, which is open to all Crystal City Area residents and employees.

“Since launching in 2008, the CSA has demonstrated real demand for locally-grown produce in Crystal City,” said Angie Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Even with our hugely successful farmers’ market, research indicates that CSA is a great addition to the community, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Great Country Farms.”

The 2010 program offers two convenient pick-up locations – in a storefront adjacent to the Concord Luxury Residences at 2600 Crystal Drive, hosted by Gould Property Company, and a first floor office suite at 2011 Crystal Drive adjacent to Noodles & Company, sponsored by Vornado/Charles E. Smith. Deliveries will occur every Thursday to make it easier for participants to take advantage of both the CSA and the Tuesday Farmers’ Market, which will reopen in May.

Bluemont-based Great Country Farms, a small-business farm, has a long-term vested interest in preserving the fertility and production capacity of their fields, thereby ensuring the employment of sustainable growing practices. Locally grown products also have a much shorter distance to travel to the consumer, leading to reduced fossil fuel consumption.

CSAs allow members to purchase "shares" of a farm's crops in the form of weekly fruit and vegetable deliveries. Produce varies week-to-week depending on the actual harvest. Farm products include lettuce, asparagus, strawberries, onions, broccoli, collards, peas, apricots, cucumbers, herbs, beans, tomatoes, corn, okra, squash, eggplant, peppers, apples, leeks, potatoes, beets, pumpkins, and many others. CSA members will also receive free admission to all Great Country Farms Events throughout the year, as well as weekly "u-pick" quantities at no additional charge.

For additional information or to sign up for the program visit Availability is limited so you must submit your application quickly to secure your share! Sign up by March 1st and receive a free “banner bag”—a cool tote made from recycled Crystal City street banners that you can use when picking up your weekly CSA goodies!
