TechShop to Construct in Crystal City

“Maker Space” Brings Innovation and Creative Hub to Arlington’s Downtown

CRYSTAL CITY, VA — “Do It Yourself” takes on a whole new meaning in Crystal City following today’s announcement that TechShop, a membership-based, creative workshop and fabrication studio and innovation hub, will open a new facility along Crystal Drive in early 2014.

TechShop is a playground for creativity - part fabrication and prototyping studio and part learning center. For a monthly or annual fee, TechShop provides members access to over $1 million worth of professional equipment – 3D printers, laser cutters, plastics and electronics labs, a machine shop, a wood shop, a metal working shop, a textiles department, welding stations and a waterjet cutter. With comprehensive instruction, workshops, and training classes, TechShop makes it possible to do anything from prototyping product design to exploring the world of making in a collaborative and creative environment.

“TechShop energizes local communities and economies because our members have the passion to actually build their dreams, whether it’s a personal project or a startup,” noted TechShop CEO, Mark Hatch in their press release today. “And we’re very excited to activate the makers of Crystal City and the larger Washington area.”

TechShop will be located in the Crystal City Shops @ 2100 along the area’s main street, Crystal Drive, surrounded by restaurants, shops, Metro, and scores of creative organizations.

“We’re very excited to provide a new home for TechShop to Crystal City,” said Mitchell Schear, President of Vornado/Charles E. Smith. “This is the perfect place to inspire TechShop’s inventors and creative thinkers.” TechShop will take the creativity in Crystal City to a new level.

“The arrival of TechShop is a huge win for Arlington County and Crystal City – cementing the community’s role as the region’s center of creation and innovation,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City Business Improvement District. “TechShop is a catalyst for activity, energy, and excitement offering an incredible amenity to area employees, residents, workers, and businesses.”

The Crystal City BID has already helped redefine the interior concourse of Crystal City through the Art Underground program adding energy, activity, creativity, and excitement through partnerships with the Arlington Artist Alliance, Synetic Theater, FotoDC, and ArtJamz. TechShop’s mission as a “maker’s space” fits perfectly into this same framework and further propels this important transformation.

Construction on TechShop is expected to begin this fall with an opening target of the early 2014. Individual and aspiring makers who would like to learn more about TechShop including information on founding memberships, institutional partnerships, or planned classes/workshops should send an email request to Arlington@techshop.com.
