CRYSTAL CITY, VA — Stretch your legs with 5K Fridays, start your spring cleaning with the Power Purge & Shred, and explore your love of local food at the Crystal City FRESHFARM Farmers Market. The Crystal City Business Improvement District’s (BID) line-up of outdoor programs celebrates the arrival of spring by keeping you fit, green and healthy.
“Don’t let this week’s wintry mix fool you, spring is around the corner and gearing up to bring the neighborhood out of hibernation,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Get your blood pumping with 5K Fridays, cross spring cleaning off your list, and fill your fridge with fresh farm produce.”
Get your weekend exercise in early with one of the most popular and fun 5K races in the metro area every Friday in April. Racers will run a professionally timed and certified course along a fast flat route through Crystal City. Try to run all four—competing each week to beat your previous time. After the race, runners can clean up with a free shower at the local Sport&Health before heading to Kora Restaurant for half price pasta, Hamburger Hamlet for the After-Party, or enjoy any number of the yummy tastes and sips offered in the area. Runners can even squeeze in a special “Yoga for Athletes” session at Mind Your Body Oasis at 7:30pm after the race – the first class is free with a race bib. Register today for one race or the whole 5K Fridays Series.
Next start your spring-cleaning by emptying your closets, garages, attics, and offices of unwanted documents, electronics, and paints for safe and secure disposal and recycling at the Power Purge & Shred on Wednesday, April 24th from 7 AM to 7 PM. Now in its sixth year, the annual event has recycled over 125 tons of electronics and paper and safely disposed of more than 300 paint cans. For those especially concerned about data security, a hard drive crusher and shredding truck will be available on site where you can have the satisfaction of watching your items destroyed in real time. The Power Purge & Shred is conveniently located in the surface parking lot located at the intersection of 20th Street and S. Bell Street, directly adjacent to 220 Twentieth Street.
Then embrace the convenience and healthy offerings of the Crystal City FRESHFARM Market. Celebrating its fifth season in Crystal City, the FRESHFARM Market will open at a new location to accommodate the construction of Crystal City’s newest office building, 1900 Crystal Drive. Located directly across the street from the Crystal City Metro station on the plaza in front of 251 18th Street South, the market will be open every Tuesday from 3-7 PM between April 30th and November 19th. The market offers shopping from local farmers and producers bringing together seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh-cut flowers, container plants and herbs, farm-raised eggs, all-natural meats, artisan baked goods, specialty foods and much more.
