Crystal City’s Floral Frenzy to Blossom with Community Engagement
Free Floral Giveaways Allow Participants to Show-off Their Green Thumb
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Despite the 2009 hurricane season nearing its end, a “tropical storm” is forecasted for the Crystal City Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, October 13th where area neighbors, workers, and visitors are invited to take home a gently-used tropical plant for free. The first of three “adopt-a-flower” themed events sponsored by the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Vornado/Charles E. Smith, Floral Frenzy is sure to bloom!
“We are engaging our residents, employees and visitors in ways that are creative and fun,” said Angela Fox, Crystal City President/CEO. “The popularity and demand for beautiful fresh-cut flowers and plants at the Crystal City Farmers’ Market inspired the Crystal City BID to develop some fun ways to promote our green programs while building an increased sense of community.”
Each Floral Frenzy event will feature a different type of plant or flower, which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The inaugural event re-pots for easy carryout the many tropical plants currently gracing the sidewalks of Crystal City. These tropical bunches will be at the Crystal City Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, October 13th starting at 3PM. The market is located along Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Streets. Come out early and save a tropical plant from the winter’s chill!
The Floral Frenzy will continue in May with a “bulb blitz” featuring yellow tulips. Participants will literally “dig in” by pulling the bulbs directly from the planters along the sidewalk in front of the 2121 Crystal Drive Courtyard at the end of the flowering season. These bulbs can be stored and then replanted in the fall for beautiful spring tulips. The Crystal City BID will provide trowels and reused packaging; avid flower-lovers do the digging! More details will follow regarding the final Floral Frenzy of the year, which will occur in early October 2010.
The Floral Frenzy further builds on Crystal City’s green image by ensuring that seasonal plantings continue to be reused and recycled after their vibrant display in Crystal City comes to an end. Floral Frenzy promises to bring the community together to participate in making Crystal City the area’s Emerald City.
