The vision for an 81-mile, inter-connected, regional network of express lanes took another step towards realization last spring with the ground-breaking for the 395 Express Lanes Project. This project is a public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban. When completed, it will extend the existing 95 Express Lanes eight miles north to the border of the District of Columbia, adding an additional HOV lane to create three reversible lanes.
The project adds needed capacity for both drivers and transit vehicles, allowing the opportunity to open up the route to individual drivers willing to pay a toll. Carpoolers with three or more people will continue to have access to the lanes at no cost - provided they have an EZ-Pass Flex, set to HOV mode.
Additional improvements will be made to the S. Eads Street interchange which provides direct access into Crystal City, Pentagon City, and the Pentagon. Construction activities are currently underway and area drivers can look forward to new 395 express lanes opening in Fall 2019.
