Potomac Yard Transitway

Crystal City-Potomac Yard Transitway

The Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway provides high-capacity and high-quality bus transit service in the five-mile corridor between Pentagon City, Crystal City, and the Braddock Road Metrorail Station in the City of Alexandria. With Metroway, the high frequency bus service operating on the transitway, the project supports new development and redevelopment occurring in Crystal City and the rest of the corridor adding capacity and providing better connections to Metrorail and other activity centers in the area. The opening of the transitway in 2016 marked the first bus only lanes in the Commonwealth


  • 75-foot long, high-curb platforms
  • Seating, trash and recycling receptacles, transit information systems at all stations
  • 6-minute peak and 12-minute off-peak headways for the 5-mile corridor between Crystal City and Braddock Road
  • Distinctive station shelters with artistic elements incorporated into the glass


  • Metroway operation began in Spring of 2015
  • Dedicated lanes and Peak-Hour dedicated lanes opened in April of 2016
  • Metroway service expansion to Pentagon City opened in late 2016
  • Addition of new stations and extension of the dedicated lanes to Pentagon City currently in design with construction anticipated in early 2019
