Crystal City and Art Whino Team Up for Couture T Competition
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – As couture descends on Crystal City, Art Whino and the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) will award one local artist for their original T-shirt design. As part of Crystal Couture, a two-week fashion, fun, and philanthropic extravaganza, the Crystal Couture T-shirt Design Competition will highlight local artists in a unique T-shirt fashion show. Sharing the runway that night will be audience members who show up in their favorite T-shirts to get a “minute on the mic” to SOUND-OFF and explain their T-choice. There will also be some of DC’s newest comics showing off their laughing stock. Come ready in your favorite T and rock the mic with poetry, comedy, and more.
“Art Whino brings a creative approach to canvas that is perfect for Crystal Couture,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “We watched them do it with shoes and wanted to see how that could translate to T's. They put it together, and the response has been overwhelming. We can't wait to see these expressions of art on the Couture runway!”
Earlier this year, Art Whino issued an open call to area artists inviting them to participate in the competition. Twenty featured designs will be printed and showcased in a runway show at Crystal Couture’s T-shirt Tuesday, February 24th, from 6-10pm. The crowd favorite will be awarded “Best in Show” and receive a $300 prize. Posters and t-shirts of the twenty featured designs will be available for sale to the public.
The T-shirts hit the runway at 8pm, and the winner will be announced later that evening. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite T-shirt, take a turn on the open mic, sample themed food, drinks and fun, and donate new or gently used clothing and footwear to Goodwill. The BID is collaborating with fashion maven Katherine Glorioso of Gossip on 23rd, Lowe Enterprises Real Estate Group, and DC Magazine to stage two style-filled weeks of sample sales, runway and trunk shows from designers, local boutiques, and area salons.
All events, including T-shirt Tuesday as well as the opening and closing fetes, are free, open to the public, and held in newly developed retail space at the corner of 23rd Street and Crystal Drive.
