New Landscaping Partnership Adds, Saves, and Reinforces Green
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Changes in the medians of Jefferson Davis Highway mark the beginning of a new partnership between the Crystal City Business Improvement District and Chapel Valley Landscape Company aimed at making area landscaping more environmentally friendly.
The Crystal City BID manages many of the central medians that represent the “front door” to the area’s businesses, residences, and restaurants. In order to ensure that these areas are clean, green, and sustainable, the Crystal City BID contracted Chapel Valley Landscape Company to provide regular maintenance of the properties utilizing best “environmental” practices. These include the use of Integrated Pest Management techniques to minimize spraying of pesticides and herbicides, as well as making strategic enhancements, such as new plantings that require minimal maintenance and no irrigation or watering.
The first of these plantings began at the end of June. This project, designed with assistance from Tolbert Feather of Feather & Associates, replaced turf, often brown throughout the hot, dry summers, with drought-resistant grasses. The project minimizes the need for frequent mowing, thereby reducing unnecessary carbon emissions, and keeps the area looking green and healthy without supplemental watering during periods of little rain.
“Embracing sustainable landscaping is an easy way to project Crystal City’s green characteristics – both literally and environmentally speaking,” said Angie Fox, President and CEO of the Crystal City Business Improvement District. “We are extremely excited to partner with Chapel Valley, a leader in the industry that recognizes the importance of seeking alternative, green solutions that can save money and the environment.”
“Chapel Valley is very excited about our new partnership with the CCBID,” said James Reeves, President of Chapel Valley. “It takes a great long-term vision and strong implementation to complete a successful green project and we share them both with the CC BID team.”
The Crystal City BID continues to roll out new programs under the Crystal Green umbrella. By reducing energy demand and the area’s carbon footprint, minimizing automotive travel, increasing recycling levels, and promoting environmental awareness and sensitivity of area businesses, restaurants, and residents, Crystal Green seeks to communicate that Crystal City is the region’s “Emerald City.”
