CRYSTAL FLIGHT – A CELEBRATION OF ART & AIR
FINAL SALUTE AND SEND-OFF SLATED FOR JANUARY 2009

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District’s overwhelmingly successful 2008 initiative, Crystal Flight – A Celebration of Art & Air, will have its final salute and charity auction send-off on January 13, 2009 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.  The 50 whimsical statues have endeared themselves to people of all ages in Crystal City since April.  The proceeds from the auctioned airplane statues will be donated to a variety of area charities, designated in advance by each airplane’s sponsor.

“Flight is an integral part of the development of Crystal City and the Crystal Flight exhibit not only paid tribute to this important connection, but also highlighted the vibrant and dynamic place Crystal City has become,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of Crystal City BID.  “Crystal Flight is a perfect example of how local businesses and area artists can come together to create fun and engaging art while simultaneously making our streetscapes more colorful and attractive.”

The charity auction will be held at the Crystal City Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive where the airplanes are on public display until the auction.  For those wanting to preview the airplanes in-person prior to bidding or for those just wanting one more nostalgic look, these whimsical and playful airplanes can be seen from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM weekdays.  Starting today, the airplanes will also be available for viewing on-line at www.crystalcity.org with on-line bidding to start on January 1, 2009. Tickets for the live auction will be sold at the door for $20.00 and include a Crystal Flight commemorative book, registration for the auction and a wine and cheese reception. Additional copies of the book, Crystal Flight – A Celebration of Art & Air, are available for purchase through the Crystal City BID website for $15.00.

Crystal Flight is the first street-wide art program undertaken by the Crystal City BID, and its big draw and overall popularity among residents, workers and visitors alike have inspired other creative Crystal City projects. Acting as Crystal City’s decorator and curator, the Crystal City BID launched the Art Walls collection in October 2008 and the program currently includes three projects:  Radiance, Prism and Ellipsis.  Local mosaic artist, Valerie Theberge, created Radiance, a 160-foot wall of dazzling splashes of color along 18th Street near the Crystal City Metro gateway area.  Another well-known local artist, Anne Marchand, created Prism, located across the street from Radiance, and Ellipsis, the first corporate Art Wall in Crystal City located at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. By using Crystal City walls as a canvas, the new Art Walls program injects character and color into the textures and surfaces of Crystal City, thereby enriching Crystal City’s gateways and gathering spaces.

Crystal City offers many active and artful events, programs and points of interest in a “green” and environmentally-minded atmosphere where patrons can feel good about their stay, inside and out.  Visit www.crystalcity.org to get up-to-date Crystal City event information.
