Crystal City’s Power Shred & Purge Commemorates Earth Day
Event Recycled 33.5 Tons of Electronics and 8,000 Pounds of Paper
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – In celebration of Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with the eCyclers division of the Kane Company is proud to announce that 33.5 tons of electronics and 8,000 pounds of paper were recycled at the annual Power Shred and Purge yesterday in Crystal City. Approximately 300 people and numerous area businesses dropped off everything from desktop computers, laptops, printers, and servers to TVs, monitors, batteries, and microwaves. Other notable numbers from the event include the collection of 500 monitors, 300 printers, 600 CPUs, 280 servers, 2,000 pounds of cables, and 3,000 pounds of batteries.
“In Crystal City we want to make it easy for people to do their part to create a sustainable and ecologically responsible environment, so hosting an annual electronics recycling event makes perfect sense,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “Feedback gathered from yesterday’s event was overwhelmingly positive, just as it has been with past events. We are proud to do our part in Crystal City for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.”
The eCyclers program provides strict chain-of-custody control over equipment from the moment of drop off until safely, securely and responsibly destroyed by their personnel and subsequently delivered to a USEPA approved, US-based recycler. The equipment recycled yesterday will be broken down into raw materials and re-used in the manufacture of new goods. The materials will never be disposed in landfills or offshore toxic waste sites.
The paper documents were shredded onsite courtesy of the Office Shredding division of the Kane Company. Document destruction helps reduce risk of exposure by ensuring proper compliance with existing privacy laws and keeping abreast of new or updated federal regulations. The Kane Company ensures the guidelines of corporate ethics programs are met, safeguarding public image, and protecting from identity theft.
As part of the Green Scene program, Power Shred and Purge encourages residents, workers, and visitors in Crystal City to minimize the area’s cumulative environmental impact by recycling unwanted electronics and outdated documents in a safe and secure manner.
