Crystal City Twilighter 5K – Not Just for Vampires
Crystal City (Arlington, VA)—As the sun sets on Saturday, July 25th, runners, and possibly some thirsty vampires, will take to the streets of Crystal City for the 2nd Annual Crystal City Twilighter 5K race. The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Pacers Running Stores, will host the race, which features spectacular nighttime views of Crystal City, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Air Force Memorial. The race also offers great runner premiums and perks including a Saucony technical runner’s shirt and the option to have results sent directly to a phone or handheld device. One of only a few evening races in the area, this event is sure to prove popular among running and fitness enthusiasts and is expected to attract more than 2,500 runners.
"There are lots of ways to spend a Saturday night," said Angela Fox, Crystal City BID President/CEO. "But, few are as fast, fit, and fun as this race. With a great finish line-up, we offer a healthy and memorable night under the stars. And, TWILIGHT fans can get their blood pumping before taking a night flight!"
In addition to the flat and fast-paced course, the finish line festival will include beverages, snacks, and music. Post-race showers will also be available courtesy of the local Sport & Health featuring towel service and various amenities. With so much to do and see, make plans to stay in Crystal City after the race for a night of fun and celebration! And, to underscore the sense of “TWILIGHT” and in honor of the upcoming release of the sequel, Crystal City BID will show the 2008 blockbuster hit outside on the big screen starting at 9:30pm at the Bell Street Courtyard diagonally across from the Crystal City METRO.
Like last year, the race will also offer an opportunity to be GREEN. Pacers will collect donations of “used but not abused” running and athletic footwear on behalf of Perpetual Prosperity Pump Foundation (www.pppafrica.org), an organization that facilitates economic growth for impoverished communities in Africa. Collected shoes are sorted and sent oversees to Ghana where they are sold in local markets for a few dollars a pair. The proceeds are used to purchase farming supplies and livestock, as well as for educational programs intended to help local farmers and families learn how to create more-sustainable lifestyles. Not only will donations help the environment by keeping millions of shoes out of landfills, but they will also help those in need. Last year’s race collected more than 450 pairs of shoes! Don’t forget to bring yours.
With free garage parking on evenings, weekends, and holidays, Crystal City is the perfect place for visitors to jump onto the Mount Vernon and Four Mile Run trails on foot, bike, or rollers! Crystal City also features a number of Crystal FIT events including free outdoor Zumba and yoga classes offered by Sport & Health, the U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic/Crystal Ride, 5K Friday series, Bike to Work Day, and the Marine Corps Marathon.
