Crystal City Shows its Stripes at Marine Corps Marathon

October 23, 2007, Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) is excited to announce a colorful dimension to the Crystal Run celebration of the Marine Corps Marathon.

Artist Anne Marchand will add “racing stripes” to the Crystal City section of the 26.2-mile course as it makes its way through Arlington County, Va. on Sunday, Oct. 28.

“The magical strip will capture all that is vibrant and fun about this event and about Crystal City's bright new image,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. The BID was inspired by the DC Commission for Arts and Humanities “Colorfield Remix” project which striped 8th Street NW in Penn Quarter. “Marchand was selected because she is a local artist well-known for her vivid colors and community spirit,” Fox said.
“We are beyond thrilled to be working with Anne Marchand. I have been a huge fan of hers for many years, and we could not think of a better artist to help us express the image of Crystal City's artfully bold approach to the area,” Fox said. “Anne's wonderful murals and other works of art have graced all areas of D.C., and we're thrilled to welcome her here to the heart of Crystal City.”

Drawing on her travels around the country and the world, Marchand incorporates bright, luminous colors in her work. She has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts from Auburn University and the University of Georgia respectively. She has been awarded multiple fellowships from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She also was nominated for the Mayor’s Art Award for Excellence in Artistic Discipline for the 34-foot mural she did in 2002 at the District’s Westminster Playground.
Marchand, who has a studio in Washington, D.C., said she was thrilled by the partnership with the BID. “I'm excited about working in Crystal City,” Marchand said. “It's a great chance to reconnect with friends of the arts, like the BID's President, Angela Fox. The “racing stripes” on the street will be a colorful and fun way to greet the 30,000 marathoners with vivid patterns of color just waiting to be crossed.”
The “racing stripes” will be painted on Crystal Drive at 20th Street overnight before the race. Then beginning at 9 a.m. race day, Crystal Run, formerly the Crystal City Street Spectacular, will get started. The event is a family-friendly fall festival combining live music, restaurant tastings and plenty of kid-oriented activities, including moon bounces, NASCAR No. 2 BB&T Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and arts and crafts with the National Children's Museum.
