Crystal Flight – A Celebration of Art & Air Commemorative Book
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Showcasing a sensational year of strategic initiatives, economic development, and transformation, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) released its fiscal year 2008 annual report. In conjunction with this publication and further demonstrating the depth of impact, the Crystal City BID also rolled out a commemorative book, Crystal Flight – A Celebration of Art & Air, marking the end of the seven-month outdoor exhibit where 50 whimsical, five-foot by five-foot airplane statues were displayed along the streets of Crystal City.
“Our job at the Crystal City BID is to change the way people see, perceive, and experience Crystal City, and we are excited about the significant strides made thus far,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “It is a time of transformation in Crystal City, and expectations are very high as we continue our efforts to engage the community and authentically overhaul the awareness of what Crystal City has to offer.”
As Arlington’s largest downtown, Crystal City has become a colorful, fun, and vibrant “place to be” due in large part to the efforts of the Crystal City BID and its many partners over the past two years. The Crystal City BID sponsored a wide variety of programs that included running and cycling races, music and wine festivals, and family-friendly celebrations. Several were new BID initiatives, such as Crystal Flight, Vintage Crystal – A Taste of Wine & Jazz, Crystal Green and Crystal Farms. Other programs were added to complement existing initiatives and repackaged within a series of umbrella brands such as Crystal Run, including the Twilighter 5K, Crystal Ride, subsuming the Arlington-Alexandria Community Bike Ride, and Crystal Green, encompassing the depth and breadth of environmental initiatives in the area. Crystal City also continues to celebrate the temporary relocation of Arena Stage into the 460-seat theater along South Bell Street. Opened in January 2008, Arena Stage performances have drawn area theater lovers and resulted in an economic boost for Crystal City area restaurants.
One of the BID’s most visible programs of 2008 was Crystal Flight, which attracted wide praise from visitors, workers and residents. Originally scheduled to “depart” at the end of the summer, the Crystal Flight statues remained on the streets of Crystal City due to popular demand and were consolidated along Crystal Drive to help celebrate the 33rd running of the Marine Corps Marathon. Crystal Flight – A Celebration of Art & Air, documents the success in a wonderfully bright book, which is available for $15.00 from the Crystal City BID website. The statues have now moved to a temporary “hangar” inside the Crystal City Shops to give art lovers, plane enthusiasts, and curious explorers one final opportunity to view the planes. The indoor show will conclude on January 13, 2009 with a Crystal Flight “send-off,” that will include a charity auction, with proceeds going to sponsor-designated charities. Auction details will be posted at www.crystalcity.org.
Crystal City offers many active, artful, and green programs, making it a great place to live, work, play, and stay.
