Arlington, Va. – The Crystal City METRO will soon have an even more convenient and colorful entryway. The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID), in partnership with Vornado /Charles E. Smith, Arlington County, WMATA, and ADI Construction, will break ground on September 4th at 10:00 a.m. on an enhancement that will create an especially comfortable commute for the more than 26,000 riders who use the Crystal City METRO station each day.
The upgrade will create an urban plaza complete with an expanded pedestrian zone, pleasant seating areas, and fresh landscaping. Construction is estimated to take six to eight weeks giving residents, employees, and visitors to Crystal City a new METRO entrance by mid-October.
“The METRO enhancement represents the overall transformation in Crystal City,” said Angela Fox, president of the Crystal City BID. “Crystal City now has nationally-renowned theater, upscale restaurants and fun events, like wine festivals, cycling races and fashion shows. The METRO upgrade is another way to showcase the vibrancy and accessibility of Crystal City.”
The METRO upgrade is the latest in a series of enhancements to Crystal City gateways – entrances that thousands of people use daily to access Crystal City. The southern gateway at the intersection of Route 1 and Crystal Drive recently got a new look with fresh landscaping and LED lighting features.
