Crystal City Glows Green in Spring
Green Scene Program features 5Ks, Art, Electronics/Paper Recycling, and Outdoor Fitness Classes

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) kicks off the 2nd Annual Green Scene – a fit, fun, healthy and green series of events. No April Fools’, the program will launch on April 1 with “Bucky Art,” a temporary statue installation which celebrates the work of R. Buckminster Fuller. The popular 5K Fridays will run every Friday at 6:30p from April 2 to April 30, and outdoor fitness classes return on April 7 and every Wednesday throughout the spring and summer. The program also hosts POWER PURGE, an electronics-recycling program with an added opportunity to SHRED those unwanted and outdated documents – safely and securely.

“We’re excited to renew and recycle Green Scene in Crystal City. The 2009 program won an Award of Distinction from the International Downtown Association (IDA), was named a finalist by the 2009 Washington Business Journal’s Green Business Award in Education and Outreach, and the Eco-Art piece won an Award of Excellence from Design Arlington" said Angie Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “As Arlington encourages recycling, emissions reduction, and other ‘green’ efforts, Crystal City continues to lead by its commitment to sustainability in fun and creative ways.”

The “Bucky Art” exhibition will premier on April 1, celebrating Arena Stage’s upcoming production of R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE which runs May 28 – July 4, 2010. Considered to be one of the founders of the GREEN movement, these statues add dimension and fun to the Arena Stage production while creating an artful walk through Crystal City’s streets.

On April 2, the 5K Friday series returns for another 5-week spectacular. Thousands of runners will take to the streets of Crystal City every Friday at 6:30PM for a fast and flat race organized by Pacers. Register at www.crystalrun5kfridays.com – intrepid runners can attempt all five races. Fuel up at Kora with ½ price pasta and then head to the post-race parties at the Concord Luxury Residences featuring DJ Adrian Loving, LuluLemon, and a Revolution Cycles’ raffle for a new bicycle! Starting Wednesday, April 7, at noon, weekly outdoor fitness classes return with Zumba, a fusion of hypnotic Latin rhythm and easy-to-follow dance moves. Classes will take place in the courtyard at 2345 Crystal Drive.

On April 21 from 7AM–7PM, the Crystal City BID offers an opportunity recycle unwanted electronics and sensitive documents at Power Purge AND Shred at the corner of 20th and Bell Street. The Kane Company will be present to safely and securely destroy old documents and recycle obsolete electronics, which will never find their way to offshore toxic waste sites while documents – both electronic and paper – will not be put at risk to potential identity theft!

Closing out the program in early May, the second iteration of the Floral Frenzy—the Bulb Blitz—will allow area residents and workers to dig in on the fun of removing several thousand tulip bulbs in Crystal City in preparation for a new set of floral landscaping. Gardeners can take the bulbs home and save them for the opportune time to plant them. As gardening is not for everyone, the Crystal City BID is happy to bring back Crystal Farms farmers’ market for its second season. Local farmers selling fresh produce, baked goods, artisan cheeses, fresh-cut flowers and more will come to Crystal City every Tuesday from 3-7PM on the sidewalk of Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Street. The market will start in May and continue into October.
