Crystal City BID and Step Afrika! Train for Marine Corps Marathon

Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District (CCBID) is proud to announce their partnership with critically acclaimed Step Afrika!, who will educate and entertain families at Crystal Runthe CCBID’s Annual Marine Corps Marathon Celebration.

To demonstrate their joint commitment to fitness, the two organizations are now “in-training” for the big event in October. Kicking off the athletic effort, Step Afrika’s Annual Home Performance Series will profile the high energy, percussive dance of African-American fraternities. In celebration of Fathers, Families, and Runners, the Crystal City BID will host the Sunday, June 15, Father’s Day performance at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.  Then, after a series of active events on both sides of the river, Step Afrika! will be motivating runners and spectators with their energetic performances at the Crystal Run/Marine Corps Marathon festivities in Crystal City, on Sunday, October 26, 2008.

“We have garnered a reputation for hosting a fun, high-energy family event during the Marine Corps Marathon,” said Angela Fox, CCBID President and CEO. “Partnering with Step Afrika!, an organization which embodies energy and athleticism, as well as fantastic entertainment, was a natural extension of our family festivities.”

Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in December 1994, the company has been recognized for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people worldwide. Step Afrika! reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Based in Washington, DC, the company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS & NPR as well as numerous books, documentaries and articles that seek to explore the tradition of stepping.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Crystal City BID,” said Brian Williams, Step Afrika! Founder and Executive Director. “They have built a momentum and vision for excitement, and we are looking forward to celebrating with them at the Marathon. We've been all across the world yet this will be our first time performing across the river in Crystal City.  It's so close to our base in DC and we hope to spend more time there in years to come."

Come see a seek preview of their talent and craft on Sunday, June 15. Performance time is 4PM.
