Crystal City Announces Farmers’ Market
Green Scene brings locally grown, healthy groceries to residents and workers
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – Local farmers selling fresh produce, baked goods, fresh-cut flowers and more will call Crystal City home starting May 12th as part of the Crystal City Business Improvement District’s (BID) Green Scene, a slate of spring events designed to help Crystal City get fit, get healthy, and get green.
“We’re thrilled to add a Farmers’ Market to the Crystal Farms program,” said Angela Fox, President and CEO of Crystal City BID. “Crystal Farms kicked off last year with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), and the success of that program clearly demonstrated the desire for more fresh produce options in Crystal City. We’re especially excited to have a proven professional like Sara Abramson, who currently runs the farmers' market at Ballston, running this program for us.”
Crystal Farms will setup shop in the heart of Crystal City on the sidewalk at 18th and Crystal Drive every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting May 12th and running through October 27th.
The new Farmers’ Market will enable area employees and residents to purchase locally produced fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, specialty foods, and artisan goods. Bringing local farmers and consumers together, Crystal Farms helps ensure the employment of sustainable growing practices and reduces fossil fuel consumption by offering locally grown goods that have a much shorter travel distance.
Also this spring, Crystal City kicks off its free Crystal Screen showing films outdoors every Monday starting May 4th. For 21 weeks, Crystal City will host America’s favorite superheroes every week including Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, and many others. To celebrate the first film, Noodles & Company will provide moviegoers with free pasta, soups, or salads. Movies begin at sundown in the courtyard at 18th and Bell Street across from Crystal City Metro station, Arena Stage, and the Crystal City Marriott.
While Crystal Farms and Crystal Screen are two great examples of the Crystal City BID’s green commitment, the environmental awareness continues beyond the spring. All events, from February’s Crystal Couture to fall’s Vintage Crystal, are designed to produce “low- to no- waste” while promoting energy efficiency and environmental quality. Events use eco-friendly products (plates, forks, cups, etc.,), compost bins, and active recycling. The Crystal City BID was recently recognized by JK Moving & Storage winning their Environmental Sustainability Award.
