Crystal City Announces 2nd Annual Crystal Ride
U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District will kick-off its first Crystal FIT feature for 2008 with a day built for cycling enthusiasts. The Metro region’s new signature event, the U.S. Air Force Cycling Classic, will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2008 from 7AM-4PM.
Beginning and ending at the U.S. Air Force Memorial and taking a loop through Crystal City, the day kicks off with Crystal Ride. A community ride open to cyclists of all abilities, Crystal Ride promotes cycling as a personal fitness choice. Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals will be awarded for those who can complete 2, 4 or 8 laps within the 3 hour window that the course will be open.
After the amateur participatory ride, racing between the military service academies will take place, with bragging rights on the line in both team time trial and sprint formats. For the main event, the Men’s professional teams will take the course, with many of the nation’s top cyclists to be in attendance. Tires hit the pavement for this race at 11:45AM for both US and International Pro Teams.
“This was a fantastic event for us last year,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the CCBID. “We are thrilled to help grow this success and look forward to seeing the cyclists hit the streets of Crystal City again. Also, as a FIT Arlington partner, we love showcasing the ‘active’ possibilities that are inherent in the Crystal City area.”
“Amateurs cyclists of all abilities will be able to use this event as a training objective, then measure the results of their hard work, being able to then compare their performance with some of the world’s top Pros,” said Robert Laybourn, President of Arlington Sports, the promoting organization. “And, they can enjoy up to 3 hours of car-free cycling!”
Spectators can catch the main race action in Crystal City while experiencing some of the City's most noteworthy restaurants and cafes. The race course is easily accessible via the Crystal City Metro Stop (Yellow/Blue Lines).
Other supporting sponsors and media partners include Booz Allen & Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, News Channel 8, Federal News Radio, The Washington Times, 3WT/1500AM, Comcast, CyclingNews.com, Mavic, Saab, and FIT Arlington.
