Calling All Artists: Illuminate Crystal City with Your Bright Ideas
Area Artists Invited to Spotlight Crystal City
Crystal City (Arlington, VA) – The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) prepares to further “enlighten” the area with “Illumination,” the latest temporary outdoor art exhibit planned for the Crystal City Water Park. With the issuance of today’s Call for Artists, the Crystal City BID announced the exhibit which will provide a lit experience that showcases the essence of the Crystal City brand.
“We’ve brought airplanes, bamboo, and the principles of Buckminster Fuller to the streets of Crystal City,” said Angela Fox, President/CEO of the Crystal City BID. “With a focus on artful lighting, ‘Illumination’ demonstrates how brightly Crystal City shines.”
To kick off the project, the Crystal City BID has announced a call seeking qualified artists to help conceive and implement the illuminated sculptures in the Crystal City Water Park. The Illumination exhibit is scheduled to open on April 1, 2010. Interested artists should visit www.crystalcity.org to learn more and download the formal application.
The sculptures will be part of the Crystal City BID’s ARTFUL program, which recently received national recognition with the International Downtown Association’s (IDA) Pinnacle Award. Illumination builds on the success of previous Crystal Art projects including Crystal Flight, Bucky Art, and Art Walls which have demonstrated the power that art can add to public spaces. The Crystal City BID is responsible for changing how people see and perceive Crystal City, and art remains a critical means of achieving this goal by adding color, interest and conversation to the streets, sidewalks and public spaces of Crystal City.
