Description

As the primary element of the Crystal City Waterpark, water is the ultimate eco-material and represents the inspiration behind the Eco-Art designs. Sustainably - and locally - grown and harvested bamboo is shaped to mimic and reflect the dynamic characteristics of water through varying lengths, orientations, and heights. The pieces seek to represent water in varying states of its liquid form including through the natural energy of waves, the geometry of a drop of water, or the rippling effect of water moving past an old wooden post of a pier.

Bamboo exhibits an exemplary capacity to flex, morph, and quickly regenerate making it the perfect material with which to meet the spirit of the Eco-Art theme. Organically-grown and biodegradable hemp rope tie is utilized as the binding mechanism and thereby fulfilling the requirements of the project.

On January 26, 2010, the BID and Sergio Martinez were given an Award of Excellence from DESIGNArlington for Eco-Art Sculptures. Regarding the artwork, the judges said:

  • The jury recognized that so much great work can be done on a temporary basis. This project is a perfect example of how the degree of invention can greatly exceed that of investment. The jurors encourage the County to continue to promote additional temporary works.
  • The judges praised the conceptual strength of the design scheme, as well as the beauty and gracefulness of the objects. They commended the artist’s originality, the execution and fabrication of the lines, and the minimalist design approach.
  • The jury described this public art exhibit as a fresh way to experience this public environment
